Lutcher, Louisiana, population 3,000, is a penis-shaped town on the Mississippi, about 50 miles west of New Orleans. Named after Henry J. Lutcher, who ran a sawmill there.
Half black, half white, median household income $34,000, 23% of the population below the poverty line.
It has a public library, a high school, a restaurant called Spectacular Tubers (selling potatoes), and some churches with unusual names, such as the King Solomon Baptist Church, the Greater King Triumph Church, and the Our Lady of Prompt Succor Chapel.
It doesn't sound very inviting. This is Trump country. Everyone praises Jesus and carries a shotgun in their truck.
But look at the news:
Girls' powerlifting team to compete in Africa.
Lutcher man participates in Baton Rouge Gay Pride Festival.
Fourth Annual Jarvis Landry Give-Back Event (I don't know what that is, but I'm all for giving back).
The annual Christmas bonfires on the Mississippi to light the way for Papa Noel. Huts of various sizes and shapes, including a "queer hut" shaped like a triangle that draws "queens" from all over the delta.
Lutcher High School, home of the fighting Bulldogs, is known for its boys and girls powerlifting teams.
And for its swimmers. The guy with the chest is so unexpectedly buffed that I looked him up on Facebook.
And found a cornucopia of shirtless photos. No speedos.
He graduated in 2017. There are more guys on the swim team today, I suppose. But one is all you really need.
