Covington Catholic High School

The administration of Covington Catholic High School is in trouble after video emerged online of some of its students wearing "Make America Great Again" gear disrupted the Indigenous Peoples March in Washington, DC.  Among other bias incidents, they surrounded an elder of the Omaha Nation, intimidated him, and yelled "Build the wall!"

Teachers and the school superintendent were standing nearby, but did not intervene.

They were in DC for an anti-abortion rally, but I guess they had time left over for hate crimes.

Twitter feeds have been portraying the boys as Dukes of Hazzard moonshine and red pickup truck rednecks, but Covington Catholic is in Park Hills, Kentucky, a ritzy suburb of Covington, right across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio.  Population 3,000, 96.6% white.

The school has published a damage-controls statement.  The mayor of Covington has also, stating that his town values diversity in race, gender, and sexual orientation.

Last May, the valedictorian of Holy Cross High School was not allowed to deliver his valedictory speech, because he discussed being gay and non-gender-conforming.  But he wasn't expelled from the school.

There are nine high schools in Covington and its suburbs, but Covington Catholic is arguably the most elite.

There are 603 students, of which 95% are white.  0.2% each are African American, Asian, and Native American.

It has a house system, like Hogwarts, with "columns" named Aquinas, Augustine, Benedict, Bosco, Chaminade, and Kolbe.

Its sports (the fighting Colonels) include Golf, Archery, Tennis, and Lacrosse.

Its student clubs include Mock Trials for future lawyers, the Stock Market Club for future CEOs, and the Governor's Club for future academics.

In a niche survey about "what phrase describes a typical student at the school," the top response is "bullying, racist bigot," but that's probably from after the news story.

The only beefcake photo I could find is this swim team winning an award.

In short, it looks like the school has been doing a good job of training future business leaders, and a bad job of preparing kids to live in a diverse society.
