Come Away with Me to Malibu

374 songs mention Malibu.  One of my friend's housemates used to play a German song incessantly: "Come away wiz me to Malibu, to Malibu, to Malibu..."

19 movies and 17 tv series have been set in Malibu. 

It's an emblem of Southern California: sun, sand, surf, wealth, glamour.






It's also a real town about 30 miles from West Hollywood, with a population of 13,000.  The mean household income is $134,000, more than double the national average.  But 10% of the population is living in poverty.

There's a high school and a university (Pepperdine, conservative Christian)








There are Episcopal, Catholic, Methodist, and various evangelical churches.

There are supermarkets, drug stores, hospitals, drug treatment centers (lots of these).

















The Malibu High School sports team is the fighting Sharks. Pepperdine's is the fighting Waves.

There's nothing to do in Malibu itself except walk around acting fancy, but nearby, in Pacific Palisades, there's the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine, a  quiet place for interfaith contemplation, founded by famous Hindu leader Paramahansa Yogananda.

And the Getty Villa (not to be confused with the museum), with 44,000 Graeco-Roman artifacts. 

I'd rather go there than to Malibu.
