A Weekend with Canadian Gaelic and Caber Tossing

Scots Gaelic is the most endangered of the Celtic languages.with only about 40,000 native speakers, and one of the most difficult to learn, even for those with a working knowledge of Irish or Welsh.

How big is your sausage?
Welsh: Pa mor fawr yw eich selsig
Irish:    Cé chomh mór is atá do ispíní
Gaelic:  Dè cho mòr ’s a tha an isbean agad

If you can't get to Scotland, there are also about 3,000 native Gaelic speakers in Canada, mostly in Nova Scotia (which, fittingly, means New Scotland).   If you happen to be in Fredericton anyway (and if you live in Maine, you might be), I suggest taking a weekend to explore the Gaelic culture of Nova Scotia.
