In the early days of the 19th century, travelers would paddle down the Susquehannah River through New York and Pennsylvania, then portage their canoes overland to the headwaters of the Allegheny River, and take it south to Pittsburgh. A small trading post called Canoe Place grew up at the portage spot. In 1838 it was renamed Port Allegany (apparently no one checked on how to spell the name of the river).
There is actually no port today, or any buildings near the river Port Allegany's economy is based on natural gas fracking and an alpaca farm. And on the Bruno Iorfido Wrestling Camp.
Bruno Iorfido was a University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown wrestler. In July 2003, during the summer before his senior year, he was on his way to work at a summer camp in Port Allegany, when he died in an auto accident. The camp was renamed in his honor, and a foundation provides scholarships for juvenile wrestlers from around the country.
