For my New Year's Resolution, I resolved to make more gay friends on the Plains, instead of having to depend on infrequent and costly trips to Indianapolis, West Hollywood, or San Francisco.
I started out by making a list of all the people I know in town. "Know" is defined as being able to state their first and last names and at least two non-work related pieces of information without having to look anything up. For example
A grandfather, rides a motorcycle.
Into role-playing games, shares a house with bf and heterosexual couple
Pagan, owns a brewery
Lives in a small rented room yet has traveled to over 100 countries.
People who have recently moved away, as nearly everybody under 30 does, don't count.
From that list, I made a subset of my friends. A "friend" is defined as someone other than a boyfriend or roommate, whom you could contact without looking anything up, and whom you would feel comfortable asking for a ride to the airport.

It turns out that I know 138 people, of whom only 26, or about 20%, are gay men.
And I have 12 friends in town, of whom only 6 are gay men.
Even more surprising: I have had sex with only 10 of of the 26 gay men I know (38%), and only 5 of my 12 gay male friends (42%).
This is amazing.
Gay couples invite me over for dinner, and DON'T invite me into their bedroom.
Gay friends get new boyfriends, and DON'T invite me to share (actually, they will stop having sex with me altogether).
For comparison, I looked up my notes for West Hollywood back in the 1990s.
