Is Everything Up To Date in Kansas City?

I always thought of Kansas City as ultra-homophobic.  My friend Matt grew there, and describes it as a wasteland of fundamentalist churches and redneck bars.  Besides, it's like the Nazarene Vatican, home of the Nazarene General Headquarters, Publishing House, and Seminary.  Scary.

But when Sharice Davids was elected to the House of Representatives with 53% of the votes, as an open lesbian, not to mention Native American and a former MMA fighter, it seems obvious that Kansas is doing something right.  She represents the 3rd district, which includes Kansas City, Kansas, and some suburbs.

So is everything up to date in Kansas City?  Have they gone about as far as they can go in meeting the needs of LGBT youth?

Kansas City, Kansas has nine high schools.

1. Bishop Ward High, established in 1908, has a Mass on its home page.  Not a good sign.  Only 10 student clubs, including Student Council and Theological Reflections.

Its team is the Cyclones. Like the one that brought Dorothy to Oz?

Here's a scene from the 2017 musical, "Homework Eats Dog."  Sounds like a lot of praising going on.

Gay groups: 0/0

2. F. L. Schlagle High School, home of the Stallions (so that's where Matt got the idea of calling everyone "my stallion").

Every year they have a "Jaw Droppin' Stallion" Award.  No comment.

They have a wrestling team, but apparently their star wrestler just lost to this guy.

Only four clubs, including "Student Coucil."

Gay groups: 0/2

3. J.C. Harmon, home of the Hawks.  Their website offers to tell us who J.C. Harmon was, but the link is broken.  The Homeless Programs and Family Advocacy links are also broken.

No list of clubs, but there's a Gay-Straight Alliance on Facebook.  Last post in 2015.

There's a wrestling page on Facebook with 452 likes, where I found this photo of a cute gay couple watching a hockey game. Well, I guess one of them is a wrestler.

I'll give them the point.

Gay groups: 1/3

4. Kansas City Christian School.  I'm not even going to check.

Gay groups: 1/4

5. Piper High, with a pirate telling us "Building the future, one child at a time."  It has a Gay-Straight Alliance and some cute wrestlers.

Gay groups: 2/5

6.Sumner Academy of Arts & Sciences, home of the Sabres (and a Roman-style helmet).  You can take courses in the Theory of Knowledge (I and II), but the only "World Languages" it offers are Spanish and French.  Even Rocky High offered more than that!

At least there's a LGBTQIA Club, with actual meetings in October 2018.   Its webpage lists about 100 "Popular LGBT Young Adult Novels."  I had no idea there were so many.

And they have a swim team, a rarity in Kansas City.

Gay groups: 3/6

7.Turner High, home of the Bears.  "Encouraging students to be self-motivated learners in a diverse society.   They have a swim team, also, but no LGBT Club.

Gay groups: 3/7

8. Washington High, home of the Hawks.  "Excellence.  Every Child.  Every Grownup.  Every Day."  No gay group.

When I searched on the Washington High wrestling team, a dozen shirtless pictures of Derek Chadwick popped up.  He's an actor/model, star of Scream Queens (2015), and from New York City.

Gay groups: 3/8

9. Wyandotte High: "Once a bulldog, always a bulldog."  No gay groups.  It offers volleyball, football, baskeball, and soccer, but I couldn't find any sports photos, so here's some band members practicing.

Gay groups: 4/9.

Verdict: Kansas City is 44% up to date.
