Unusual High School Names, Part 2: Tallahassee

Tallahassee is in the Florida panhandle, what they call the Big Bend.  It's the most southern of Florida cities: 470 miles from Miami but only 10 miles from Georgia, and 30 from Alabama.  Yet it's also the state capital and the site of Florida State University, which is apparently big in football.

I haven't spent a lot of time there, but the 17th-century Mission San Luis de Apalachee is worth a visit, and St. Peter's Anglican Cathedral is interesting, with an obtrusive full-color crucifix hanging down over the altar.

It also wins the second prize for the most unusual high school names.  No Lincolns, Washingtons, or Franklins here!

1. Amos P. Godby  High, named after a former school superintendent, has 1200 students.  In addition to the usual sports, it offers boys' and girls' weight lifting.

2. Christ Classical Academy.  You expect "classical" to be teaching Greek and Latin, but "Christ" makes it sound like a fundamentalist Christian school.  It's actually both, classical and fundamentalist.  Students are divided according to the medieval liberal arts, grammar, logic, and rhetoric.

3..  Leon High, the oldest high school in the state, founded in 1831.  It offers weight lifting and cross country, but no wrestling.

4. James S. Rickards High.  I don't know who it's named after, but there's also a beer band in his name.

5. Lawton Chiles High, named after a Florida senator.

6. Gretchen Everhart School, "where everyone is exceptional."  It serves students with intellectual disabilities through age 23.

7.  Ecclesia Christian Academy.  I can't find out a lot about this place.  Google Images just yields pictures of nearby houses for sale.  There are a LOT of houses for sale nearby.

8. Matthew Robertson High.  Their team is the Warbirds.

9.  Innovation School of Excellence.  Do they have a most excellent curriculum?  Do they give the Monty Burns Award for Achievement in the Field of Excellence?   You can only be excellent to Grade 9; for high school you have to transfer to somewhere else.

Like to Robertson High.

10. Betton Hills School.  Betton Hills Prep School only goes to grade 3, unlike every other prep school in the world.  For grades 4-12, you go to Betton Hills School, which appears to be held in somebody's house.  There are 8 students.
