If you're at all interested in the paranormal, you have to visit Point Pleasant, West Virginia. It's a bit of a drive, 4 hours from Cleveland, 2 hours from Columbus and Dayton, but worth it to investigate Mothman.
In November and December 1967, dozens of people in the small town were startled and even chased by a humanoid being with moth wings and red glowing eyes, dubbed Mothman. On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge that spanned the Ohio River collapsed, killing 46 people. Mothman sightings suddenly ended. Had he appeared as a warning of the approaching catastrophe? Or was he somehow responsible?
Crytozoologist John Keel popularized Mothman in his 1975 book
The Mothman Prophecies, which inspired a terrible 2012 movie. Point Pleasant has capitalized on its notoriety, with a 12-foot statue of Mothman, a small but busy Mothman museum, and a Mothman Festival every September, with a 5-k, a beauty pageant, paranormal lectures, and cosplay.
There's also a memorial to those who died in the bridge collapse, and other sites of historic interest, plus annual music and folklore festivals. Next week they have Studs of Steel on tap, a male strip show that "captivates men and women alike."
The combined junior/senior high school offers the standard swimming, wrestling, cross-country, and power-lifting (no their team is not the Mothmen).
And the local Grindr is full of guys of all ages, from 18 to 80, who want to date tourists.
