Palm Springs, July 2016
Palm Springs, about 100 miles east of West Hollywood near Joshua Tree, is hot -- over 100 degrees in the summer. I don't know why, but the heat tends to attract an older crowd. 30% of the population is over 60, mostly gay retirees. There are gay bars with karaoke and show tunes; there are discos where guys over 60 get in free, but twinks have to pay; there are "Gay and Gray" sex parties for old guys and their admirers.
If you want a break from being a twink magnet, but aren't ready to retire yet (or can't afford to pay double what you would in West Hollywood for an apartment), you and your boy toy are welcome to just visit. You can lounge around the pool, go dancing, eat, shop, and cruise old guys til you drop.My ex-boyfriend Lane and his husband Ben went up almost every summer. Ben liked the annual "50 over 50 Party": a pool party for 50 older guys and their admirers, by invitation only. No sex -- at least not officially -- but lots of nudity and cruising. Ben wasn't usually into "sharing," but they were on vacation, and what happened in Palm Springs stayed in Palm Springs, so maybe -- just maybe -- he would meet a third guy to bring back to the hotel. As long as he was over 50 -- none of that "twink magnet" nonsense.
There were always a few celebrities at 50 Over 50: John Glover, Patrick Adiarte, Stephen Geoffries, Richard Chamberlain -- and, in 2016, Keanu Reeves! 52 years old, bearded, a little chunky, but still recognizable.
"I had such a crush on him, back in the day!" Ben exclaimed. "Not the action hero of The Matrix...the cute, conflicted gay teen of Bill and Ted and My Own Private Idaho."
"My friend Will the Bondage Boy tricked with him," Lane said. "He's into BDSM. We should tie him up later."
"That would be great...but too late, looks like he's spoken for." Keanu was with a boy toy barely out of his teens -- short and slim with thick rust-colored hair and pierced ears.
"Not necessarily -- you ever hear of double-teaming?"
"With a kid?" Ben scowled.
"You do what you gotta do," Lane said. "If you want Keanu in your bed, you have to take the boyfriend. I'm an old pro at celebrity hookups -- let me take care of the details."
Lane was exaggerating -- he had been with only a few celebrities, and usually at parties where anybody could go with anybody. Actually making a move....
He watched as Keanu and the boy toy went into the secluded dark room/maze together -- but a moment later, Keanu left alone.
Curious, Lane went into the dark room. The boy toy was sitting in the toilet stall, naked, with a chubby bear in his 50s.
"Hi, you know the guy you came in with, Keanu Reeves? Is that your boyfriend?"
"My Sir," he corrected. "But only when he's in town.
"Um..." Lane struggled to stay focused. "My husband and I were wondering if he would share you tonight, after the party?"
The boy toy looked up. "Is hubbie a Daddy, too?"
"Yep." Lane took out his phone to show him a picture.
"Two Daddies! Sounds epic. I don't need Sir's permission -- like I said, he's only my Sir when he's in town, and he's going back to L.A. after the party. I'll be there at 10:00."
"Um...it has to be Sir and you, or no deal."
He shrugged. "I'll ask Sir. Now with all due respect, Daddy, shut up and let me get to work"
